Game Notes:

The game, Winter War, is from the S&T magazine issue number 33. The game covers the Russo-Finnish War during the phase between November 1939 and March 1940. This phase of the war deals with the Soviet invasion of Finland and the Finnish attempts at stopping them. In spite of appearances, it has been my experience that the Finnish player has a better than even chance of stopping the Soviet player. At first glance, the sides seem tremendously imbalanced, but after a few turns it should become apparent that the Finnish advantages offset the brute strength of the Soviets to some extent.

Pieces:

The game pieces are defined by their classes with the attack strength, the defense strength and movement value. The specific unit designations are irrelevant to setup or play and are only included for historical purposes.

Force Pools:

Eliminated pieces are to be removed to the appropriate 'Dead Pile' force pool, as they count for victory points at the end of the game.

Reinforcements are handled with force pools. The pool titles include a turn of entry, a controlling side, and an entry hex. As an example, the force pool titles "T5 Finnish" would indicate a turn five reinforcement for the Finnish entering on any hex.
